Forty Minutes on the Edge

Forty Minutes on the Edge

We have a word. “Session.” It means I unlock him but he doesn’t finish. He’s known the word since last winter. When I drop it at dinner, between “pass the salt” and “your mother’s coming Sunday,” his face changes after a couple of seconds. He keeps chewing, but the fork moves slower.

A session is my pleasure, not his. I didn’t see that at first. Early on I thought I was giving him a treat. Then I noticed I was looking forward to the evening myself. I liked watching. My own breath caught when he reached the fourth round and started whispering numbers to stay in control.

The routine is simple. He lies across the bed on his back, hands behind his head, fingers laced. Nothing is tied; he holds the position himself. I sit beside him in whatever I wore that day, set the key on the nightstand where he can see it, and open the cage. I give him a minute to lie still and breathe while he hardens.

Then the counting starts.

I take him to the edge slowly, reading his breath, the way his stomach tightens, the tension in his thighs. A second before he tips I lift my hand away and say, “One.” He exhales like he’s come up for air. I wait until the shaking stops, then begin again.

After the third he starts to ask. Not with words at first, just his eyes. Then it’s “Ma’am…” and he stops, because he knows asking adds another round. He bites his lip. I run two fingers along the inside of his thigh, where the skin is thinnest, and his whole body jumps.

There’s a moment I like best. A clear drop appears on his stomach and he sees me notice it. He flushes. A man with a mortgage and reports due, turning red because his wife is watching him leak. I touch the drop with one finger and bring it to his mouth. He licks it clean without being told.

“Four.”

By five the bed is moving a little under him. His eyes are shut, knuckles white behind his head, lips moving without sound. That’s the edge: not release, but the second before it, held for forty minutes. Nothing else exists for him then. No work, no Sunday call. Just my hand and the count.

“Five.”

And then the cage. I don’t draw it out. I bring the cage over and wait while he softens enough for it to go back on; that wait is the hardest part, because he can’t calm down and he knows it. The lock clicks. The key goes around my neck. He lies there looking at the ceiling, then turns his head and says, “Thank you.”

The thank-you isn’t politeness. For forty minutes he was kept exactly where he wanted to be and never allowed past it. A year ago I wouldn’t have believed anyone could be grateful for that.

What I get lasts the next three days. He moves like he’s plugged in, catches my eye, asks what needs doing. The floor gets mopped without being mentioned. Coffee shows up before the alarm. All of it from forty minutes and one click.

I don’t do it often. Once every couple of weeks, sometimes less. More often and he’d get used to it, and the edge would dull. Better he waits for the word and never knows when it will come. The fork slowing at dinner is part of the point.
