The chain in my hand while I read

The chain in my hand while I read

The clamps came in an Amazon box left on the porch. Two on a chain, adjustable, nothing fancy. I carried the package in my bag for a week before I found an evening that felt right.

This is a practice for a lazy evening. Nothing to manage. Put them on and let time do the rest while I turn pages. I’ve noticed the parts of this that suit me best are the ones where I do almost nothing and he carries something difficult. The clamps fit that exactly.

He sits on the floor beside my chair, back against the leg. Naked except for the cage. I lean down and fasten them myself, one at a time, listening to the way his breath catches. The first minute is almost nothing. By the third it starts to burn. By the tenth it is steady pain with nowhere to go, and that is the point. I take the chain between them and wind it twice around my fingers. Then I open the book.

After that it is quiet. He breathes through his nose, trying to keep it even. I read. Now and then, between paragraphs, I give the chain the smallest tug and hear him pull air. I don’t look at him. That matters too: he knows I could pull at any moment and that I am looking at my own page instead.

“Miss,” he says after twenty minutes. Quietly.

“Did you want something?”

“No.”

Those three lines are the whole conversation. Everything else is his breathing and the sound of paper.

The sharpest second is the removal. People don’t know until they feel it: when the clamp comes off, blood rushes back and the pain is worse than anything before. He knows this now and still waits for the moment like relief, and every time he makes a sound I can’t quite name, something between a groan and a laugh. I take them off one at a time. Between the first and the second there is a pause. He waits. I wait. Then the second.

I rest my hand on his chest where the skin is hot. Just hold it there. He leans his cheek against my knee.

The cage has been locked the whole time. I saw it shift when I tugged the chain. Pain and wanting don’t argue in him anymore. I understood that years ago and still notice it each time.

What I feel is calm, honestly. Forty minutes with a book, warm weight against my leg, and complete say over two fingers I never even had to use. Once I got so caught up in the story I forgot him for ten minutes and he never reminded me. Later I asked why he stayed quiet. He said, “You were reading.” I felt a little ashamed and very content.

The clamps live in the drawer with my hair clips. He knows where. Sometimes I see the drawer left an inch open and I know he looked. I don’t mention it. Let him look.
