He nodded and set the bags by the door

The Amazon driver rang just as we were hanging up our coats. The bags sat by the door while the drill started up again upstairs, the neighbours back at their renovation after lunch.

Later, after the quiet evening, he licked everything clean the way we had arranged. I pointed at the floor and said, “You can tonight, but clean it up afterwards.” He nodded without arguing.

We put the kettle on in the kitchen. “Tea?” “Yes.” “Your mother called this morning, forgot to book the eight o’clock slot at the surgery.” We talked about the mortgage, about work. I mentioned the new trainers were rubbing but it was too late to take them back.

An hour later he was lying on his back in the bedroom. His breathing had gone uneven. I ran a finger down his stomach.

He hesitated a little. “Don’t draw it out,” I said quietly and put my hand on the back of his neck. The bed creaked.

Afterwards he cleaned up with his tongue, quietly. I felt the warmth of it and the small tremor in his shoulders. For a moment I wondered if he would stop. He didn’t. I almost laughed at myself for choosing the exact time the drill started again next door.

There was no loud talk afterwards. He simply did what we had already agreed. The taste stayed on the skin longer than the tension itself.

Power lasts afterwards. When he finished I left my hand where it was for another minute. He stayed where I had placed him.

The coffee maker clicked on at seven the next morning. I stood by the window listening to the street while he sliced bread for breakfast. “Milk’s finished,” he said. “Pick some up on the way,” I answered without turning. He nodded, set his cup down and left. An ordinary gesture, but it already carried the evening before.

Consistency matters more than intensity. In the afternoon I called from the train about the Zoom meeting. He answered calmly, as if nothing had changed, but I could hear the extra pause before he spoke.

The hour it faded came at lunch. I sat at my desk with cold coffee in a paper cup and caught myself wanting to do it again tonight, not to push harder, just to see how he would meet the same rule a second time.

What I realised later was that the rule holds not because of anything said in the moment but because he already knows it is coming. A plain agreement works better than sudden impulses.
