He stood at the window afterward

He stood at the window afterward

The iPad on the kitchen counter was still playing a podcast when we went to bed. I was in pajamas, a day off, nothing special. Unlocked the cage, half an hour in bed, he came. Usually he presses against my back afterwards. This time he lay on his back, hand across his forehead, quiet. Ten minutes later he asked if I’d remembered to switch off the coffee maker.

Voice even, like he was talking about the weather.

I got up, checked, came back. He was already sitting on the edge of the bed looking out the window. Rain tapped on the gutter. We didn’t touch. I didn’t push. Just sat beside him and mentioned the water in the vases. He nodded and went to fold the towels.

The silence by the window

After he comes he goes cold. Not from indifference, from the drop. Our cooldown hour is always clear: warmth fades, this distance appears. He says himself that in those minutes “don’t want to think about anything, just do things”.

A couple of years ago I asked myself why he pulls away after sex. Prolactin and dopamine, that’s the reason. It lasts anywhere from forty minutes to an hour and a half. He won’t discuss anything and doesn’t want closeness. He’s just ready to do.

Another evening showed the same thing. After dinner we were back in bed, he came quickly. Seven minutes later he was already up moving plates. “Tell me if anything needs taking out.” I only asked about the countertop. He wiped it without a word, no jokes, then stood by the window again while I read.

Window after the drop

The cooldown hour always feels the same. While he sorted towels I asked him to check the loose handle on the fridge. He did it, came back to bed changed, reached for me, silently asked if he could hold me. The difference is always obvious.

List of three tasks

At first the coldness made me angry. Then I understood: it’s simply the time he’s most obedient. I started giving him small jobs during it—checking bills, the toolbox drawer, ironing. He gets through them without extra words.

Once I gave him too many and he was genuinely tired by the end. I admitted to myself it was my fault. My usual dry joke at my own expense: thought I’d planned it perfectly and he just went quiet.

Important not to overload. I keep a list of three or four short tasks. After them he usually comes back on his own and asks to lie beside me.

Three rules that stayed

Sometimes I just sit nearby and read while he works. Presence without pressure. Over time he started saying it himself: “I’m in that state right now, give me something to do with my hands.”

Kettle on the stove

If this sounds familiar, try simply timing it. Notice exactly when he grows quieter. Give a task that can be done without talking. After an hour or two check whether he’s back.

For husbands reading this: your wife has already noticed the hour. No need to feel ashamed. Better to say, “I’m in the drop right now, give me something to do with my hands.”

We don’t turn it into a ritual. We just account for it. The spare house key is still in the drawer, forgotten since last week.
